WHY

  • In this time of ever-increasing awareness of climate and its effect on the planet, A Musical Ode to Earth is a classical concert focusing on our relationship with the world. Its feature work is Pale Blue Dot (2014) for string quartet by prominent Philadelphia composer David Ludwig. Commissioned by the Caramoor International Music Festival for the Dover Quartet, the work takes inspiration from Carl Sagan’s portrayal of planet Earth and the famous image of the planet taken by NASA’s Voyager in 1990. Composer’s notes: http://www.davidludwigmusic.com/shop/pale-blue-dot.
  • A Musical Ode to Earth offers oceanic inspiration from another renowned Philadelphia composer George Crumb and his Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) for piano, flute and cello. According to FAMC series founder Rollin Wilber: “Crumb is known for turning every supposition on end, from how the music looks on the page, to how it sounds, to how it is presented, creating a visually affecting, and musically expanding experience.”

  • The program also includes works by Claude Debussy, Lili Boulanger, Ernest Bloch, Henry Cowell, and Jacques Ibert

  • Mood lighting, projected imagery, and costume elements will compliment the program to inspire visually strong imagery of the musical selections.
