Music speaks for the marginalized …. and inspires those who listen
.
Our concert follows a theme of struggles within the human condition as seen through the lens of various composers’ lives; then draws on the power of their music which transcends it all.

MUSIC, COMPOSERS & SOURCES:
Samuel Barber’s personal melancholy, and producing works such as his transcendent “Adagio for Strings” (performed here in its original string quartet setting);
Beethoven’s remarkable rising above his life’s struggle with deafness;
Shostakovich’s endless strife with state tyranny;
Schumann’s life experience with mental illness, as with so many who have been maligned for that disorder;
Henry Cowell’s composing unique work while imprisoned on ‘morals charges’;
the effects of Rebecca Clarke’s subtle oppression and depression.
