FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC Listening Seminars – examining the potency of musical expression
with guest speaker, Ted Spaeth
and Rollin Wilber, pianist
The philosophy of the great and highly regarded 19th century German thinker, Arthur Schopenhauer, intersected with what he considered the highest art: music.
He deemed music to be the purest form of art, a timeless and universal language which is comprehended everywhere, and can “imbue global enthusiasm, if in possession of a significant melody.”
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
Music which is sublime for one person, may often be similarly shared with others.
What music is most meaningful to you?
We would like you, our audience members, to contribute ahead of time, musical works or parts of music that specifically provide you deep gratification, whether it be of comfort, thrill, or any other strong, emotional satisfaction. These experiences, we consider to be Schopenhauer moments.
~~~ Has the contemplation of musical beauty ever helped you transcend your own personal suffering or hardship?
If so, (1) what was the nature of that suffering or difficult time, and (2) what was the specific music that helped you rise above it? ~~~
Responses have led to some great music coming: Mozart (Requiem), Brahms (Intermezzo), Vaughn-Williams (A Lark Ascending), Beethoven (Emperor Concerto), Chopin (Ballade in G minor and other works)…
THIS WILL BE A ONE-OF-A-KIND SEMINAR!! Share your music choices of deep, personal interest! (these do not have to be limited to pieces for the piano only, or to classical music.)
Send the name of your suggested works by FRIDAY, APRIL 11, to:
