Composers and themes from  Scandinavian countries form the basis on which to present this richly styled recital of works worthy of savoring.

Music by composers of Scandinavian heritage:

Howard Hanson, American composer of Swedish origin
Edvard Grieg, famous Norwegian composer
Johan Helmich Roman, Swedish Baroque composer

Jean Sibelius, famous Finnish composer
Laura Netzel (pseudonym, N. Lago, needed for publishing), in a rare work by this late-Romantic, Finnish woman composer

Erland von Koch, Swedish composer

Scandinavian source:

A work by Walter Gieseking,  based on a musical theme by Norway’s Edvard Grieg.

________

This recital culminates in the remarkable  “Variations on a Theme by Grieg,” a major work for flute and piano, rarely heard and with few existing recordings.

For this work, the composer is the great, 20th century German/French pianist, Walter Gieseking. In keeping with our concert’s concept is his usage of a theme by Edvard Grieg as the basis for this powerful and beautifully written set of variations. We believe this may be one of the first times this work has ever been performed in Philadelphia.

Please join us for this highly unusual recital, where we will speak about these wonderful, musical-cultural histories.
